Astigmatism Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments
When it comes to dealing with and identifying eye problems, we have just about seen it all. When you visit our Puerto Rico LASIK office for a consultation, we will perform a full diagnostic exam to determine what the cause of your vision problem is and what is the best way of dealing with this particular eye care issue.
One common eye care problem that we see a lot at our office is astigmatism, which is a common refractive error than plenty of people have faced. Astigmatism refers to an issue with the curvature of the eye. This may mean an issue with the cornea or an issue with the lens of the eye. Sometimes the eye becomes ovoid or elongated rather than remaining round. When this happens, a blurring of vision occurs. The light passing through the eye will become dispersed or scattered rather than being focused at the retina as would occur in regularly shaped eyes.
In many cases, astigmatism occurs in conjunction with myopia and hyperopia, two other refractive errors better known as nearsightedness and farsightedness, respectively. These two refractive errors also involve the way light is improperly focused on the retina.
Dealing with astigmatism is actually not too difficult. In fact, many people are able to have their astigmatism treated through simple and traditional treatment options.
One treatment option for astigmatism is corrective lenses. This means that you will receive prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses to help correct your vision. Another option for treating astigmatism is refractive surgery. This involves the use of lasers to alter the shape of the cornea, with common examples of this surgery being Puerto Rico PRK and LASIK.
Should you have astigmatism and would like to improve your vision and enhance your quality of life, we encourage you to contact our Virgin Islands laser vision correction centers. During an eye exam at our office, we will be able to help you enhance your vision.
